By Ken R. White

Candidate for Board Member; Mariemont City School District

Text of speech confirms my position on the Levy, Fiscal Responsibility and 4 Policy Changes I support
My name is Ken White. I am running for the Mariemont City Board of Education. This year we have 3 candidates and 2 open seats. This is my first election and I need your vote.

I live in Mariemont with my wife, Joy Carlson. We have two children, Katherine and Jonathan, who attend Mariemont Elementary.

I am not a politician or lawyer. I work in the chemical industry; primarily in new business development. We have probably never met. Joy and I spend more time at weekend soccer games than visiting with friends and neighbors. I guess we are pretty typical.

After hearing all that; you may wonder why I am running. First, I have a strong financial background. I want our board to be more efficient with our money while maintaining the quality of education. I will be an advocate for FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY. This is what we do in business every day.

This year we are also voting for a 5.5 mill levy--which raises $1.3 million per year forever. If the current increases in Board spending continue---we will need an even bigger levy in 3 years. The current 5 year budget calls for spending to grow about 6% each year while revenue only grows by 2%. Combine the projected cuts in state funding for schools with this imbalance in spending versus revenue AND your property taxes will double in 12-15 years.

That's issue 1 and 2. Pass this levy BUT immediately slow our growth rate in spending.

If elected, I will be just one of 5 votes on the board. I am focused on spending issues, but I am also for the following:

  • Neighborhood schools (for example Bill Gates is giving $51 million to NYC for building neighborhood schools)
  • Outsourcing Services such as maintenance, janitorial and busing (it works for Proctor and Gamble)
  • Ask the superintendent to develop a plan to rehab or replace our aging elementary schools (this has been put off too long)
  • Adding a quarterly board meeting called "Voice of the Public" (maybe on a weekend day) so the Board can answer questions and give an update about school plans.

Finally, I believe we live in great communities (Columbia Township, Fairfax, Mariemont and Terrace Park) with great parents, great students and great school employees. I believe we need to immediately make tough choices and be smarter with our money. If we don't act now, we may face bigger and harder choices later on.

Please give me your vote on November 4th. Email me at VOTE4KENWHITE@aol.com with any questions or comments.

Political documents are produced by the campaign committee "Vote Ken White for Schools". 3829 Settle Road Cincinnati, Ohio 45227. Joy Carlson, Treasurer.
