Dr. Florence Newell Candidate for RE-ELECTION Cincinnati Board of Education

Political Philosophy

All children can learn and be successful in school when students, parents, teachers, administrators, community members, and policy makers all form partnerships to reach that goal. Everyone involved in educating our students must realize that learning begins with infancy and continues throughout adulthood.

Pre-K through 12 teachers, parents, child care providers, school administrators, volunteers, businesses, higher education, health care providers, community service agencies, and policy makers must all make a full commitment and engage in collaborative efforts in order for all students to achieve academic success. Educators must provide continuous high-quality instruction for every student. It is essential that knowledgeable and skilled educators develop and implement effective programs, continually assess progress, and provide powerful intervention. Informational and training sessions should be provided for family members and community members to facilitate involvement in student learning.

Schools should also be supported by board members, school administrators, and business and community partners who facilitate the development and implementation of effective programs in schools and in the community. Providing community based adult education programs and parenting programs can result in increased parental involvement in schools and the education of their children.

As our facilities evolve into community learning centers, schools should continue to provide strong core instructional programs. Enrichment activities should be provided to expand students learning opportunities. To safeguard the well-being of students, and to remove barriers to learning, a full range of health and mental health services should be available for students and their families.

In summary, educators, family members, and members of the community all play a valuable role in the academic success of all students. Therefore, school-family-community partnerships are necessary and essential.
