Vocational Education

By Odessa P. Johnson

Candidate for Board Member; Modesto City Schools; 4 Year Term

This information is provided by the candidate
All students graduating from high school should have developed skills that will allow them to go to work or college.
Many of you reading this will remember when high schools offered shop classes for those students who wanted to go directly to work or who wanted to go to the Jr. College. Because of the high cost of keeping state of the art equipment at each school, many shop offerings have been discontinued and offered as Pathways at each of the 5 high schools. Each high school offers a different "Pathway" and students from across the city can enroll in their interest. Many allow extra credit at the Jr. College in a 2=2 program. Current offerings include Health Academy, Public Safety, Entrepreneurship, Adv. Animal Science, Entertainment Stage, Child Care, Technical Education, Engineering Academy, Ornamental Horticulture and Graphic Communication. These kinds of programs keep students interested in school and provide the skills for an entry level job upon completion of high school. The County Office of Education's Valley Business High is another example of equiping students with basic and work skills. I support these kinds of programs and will encourage expansion.
