Questions Asked Of The Candidate - #2

By Nancy E. Mc Caa

Candidate for Board Member; Sunnyvale School District

What have you done or would you do in the office you seek to combat violence? Give two examples.
The majority of violence in our society stems from: 1) improper conflict resolution, and 2) poor education. The schools can be used from day 1 to resolve these causes.

We should teach our children that violence is not an acceptable response or form of resolution, and that means not just "time out" to think about their actions. Zero-Tolerance is more than just the punishment side of things. The schools should have conflict resolution classes that include role-playing, negotiation skills, and so on.

In addition, each child should receive a quality education. There should be reading programs available through the schools and libraries to help poor readers. After school "study halls" to help low income, and latch key children with homework. Perhaps older students could help younger ones, and get credit.
