Smart Voter

Fair chance for all.

By Robert Lee Gilland Heslop

Candidate for Board Member; Cupertino Union School District

This information is provided by the candidate
No child should be left behind in any way, All children should have an equal and fair chance at a great education.
I believe that all schools in the district should be on equal ground. A child moving from one school to another during the school year should be able to pick up where they left off. This transition can be a positive experience if the schools had a standardized curriculum followed throughout the school district. This would allow all students to study the same subjects at the same time in each grade level. All students will be well prepared for testing from STAR testing to high school exit exams.

We also must educate our children in the arts. When children engage in an expressive art as basic education and as a distinctive way of knowing, we can appreciate the importance of education through art. The arts open our minds to new language and social skills needed to be a successful future leader in the community. When children engage in expressive arts such as painting, drawing, music acting and literature they can vent thoughts and emotions in healthy, growth producing ways. They gain a sense of accomplishment which helps along the path toward self affirmation. Children come to appreciate the aesthetic elements in their environment. By exposing our children to the vast culture and diversity within our district, we allow them to embrace the world through the arts.
