By Ben Johnson, II

Candidate for Member Governing Board; Alvord Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
I am seeking re-election to the AUSD Board of education. I am confident that I held true to my commitments to the community. I am requesting your support for my re-election as an Alvord Unified School District Trustee on November 4th this year. As you know I am dedicated to improving the quality of our neighborhood schools. My years of volunteer involvement in community affairs and present position as a member of the Board have provided the experience and background that are necessary to continue as an effective representative on the Alvord Board of Education. Due to the fiscal problems facing our state public schools are being impacted even further. I am pleased to say that through sound fiscal decisions we are not laying off any employees nor are we eliminating class size reduction. The following will give you a sense of our accomplishments since I have served as a board member:

With strong community support, we passed a $57 million school bond to improve the condition of our existing schools and increase the number of classrooms to meet our ever-growing community. The revenue of the local bond combined with state resources has brought $100 million to the district.

To address our growth, the Board authorized, and I supported the building of a new middle school. The new school, Villegas Middle School is the first step in meeting our rapidly growing community. We continue exploring other opportunities for additional schools. We have also completed the Alvord District Stadium.

School dropout rates (grades 9-12) are down to 1.09%. College enrollment continues to increase with enrollment rates for UC/CSU higher than county and state rates. We have formed the Arlanza/La Sierra Collaborative that has enabled elementary students to receive tutoring services and high school students to receive mentoring from La Sierra University faculty.

Measures such as the canine detection program have been a positive deterrent to help keep drugs and weapons off our campuses.

I hope to provide each voter with sufficient facts upon which to base his or her decision on November 4th through neighborhood coffees and community forums. If you really want to help our children during the next four years, your support now and your vote for me November 4th will do it. Please feel free to call me at (909) 687-8128 or email childrn1st@aol.com if you have any questions or if you would like to participate in my campaign.
