Why I Am Running

By Michelle Knight

Candidate for Director; Monterey Peninsula Water Management District; Division 4

This short essay explains my rationale for running for this position.
I believe that the current Water Board majority has shortchanged the citizens of the Monterey Peninsula by not focusing their efforts on finding a reliable and sustainable water source. Their current efforts to build a desal plant at Sand City is not a project that will help with our water shortage. It is being sized only to make up for the State Board ordered Carmel River deficit. We will then have to look for an additional project to find water for legal lots of record and for citizens in our communities on water waiting lists. I believe this is wrong! The right project will help both the environment and the people + and cost us, the rate payers, a lot less! We need to bring the public back into the process + the current board is unresponsive to the public and is intent on following their own agenda of using water as a tool to control the cities and county. We need a board that will listen to the concerns of the citizens and respond + not just focus on solving the environmental problems.

Remember the underlying problem: We need a water supply project for everyone.
