Are students failing the test or is the test failing the student?

By James A. "Shanbrom" High School Coordinator

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Antelope Valley Union High School District

A well-designed test would measure not only how well they do but how much they know of the concepts and ideas educators know is important for them to know to become achieving members of our society
Standardized testing has been mandated by the State of California. These tests help compare our students with those of other districts throughout the state. However, these standardized tests often reflect bias toward students with other backgrounds and needs when compared with students in the Antelope Valley High School District. While there is merit in comparing our students with others, it would be more beneficial simply to compare our students at the end of a school year with themselves at the beginning of that year to see how much they have learned. The method would be to give the students a pre-test at the beginning of the year and then a post-test at the end and compare the results. A well-designed test would measure not only how well they do but how much they know of the concepts and ideas educators know is important for them to know to become achieving members of our society. Are they being adequately prepared for post-high school education and training? Are they learning information and skills, which will help them forge ahead in the working world?

If elected to the Antelope Valley High School District, I will work toward gathering interested and appropriate parents, teachers, and administrators to form a group to look into this important matter.
