Terry Ragins for Torrance School Board

Dear Friend of Torrance Unified School District,

I am writing to let you know that I am a candidate for election to the Torrance Board of Education on November 4, 2003. I hope that you will support and endorse my candidacy.

Educating our youth is THE most important job that we do! As Jackie Kennedy said, "If you bungle raising your children, I don't think whatever else you do matters very much." The Torrance Unified School District needs an active, strong school board member who knows the school district and the local school community...I CAN BE THAT INDIVIDUAL. Parents in Torrance need an assertive advocate who will represent parental views, needs, and wants on the School Board...I CAN WORK FOR YOU AND BE THAT INDIVIDUAL. As a parent, I share your concerns about providing the best for our students. After all, the exceptional school system in Torrance is the reason we purchased our home here 16 years ago. The education of our two sons, both currently at North High School, is our main priority.

My experience and know-how can be put to work to benefit our students. As an occupational therapist, I offer expertise in health-related issues, academic procedures and instructional methods. I also have a keen awareness of concerns related to the education of the exceptional students within our district.

As a parent, I know our schools well. I have served thousands of hours as a volunteer throughout the last 12 years. Some of my contributions include Unit PTA President and VP positions; Torrance Council PTA Secretary, Parliamentarian and School Board liaison; Torrance Education Foundation Executive Board; District Math, Science, and Health steering committees and Textbook Selection committees; GATE Advisory Committee; District Communication Council; and Drug Alcohol and Tobacco Education Advisory Committee. At the school level I served on School Site Councils and worked as the Library Director, Accelerated Reader and literacy/math tutor and supervisor. I also participated in a successful distinguished school application and Coordinated Compliance Review and the implementation of award winning PTA programs related to literacy and Red Ribbon Week anti-substance use activities.

I was honored to be selected as recipient of PTA's Honorary Service and Continuing Service Awards. I hope to increase my involvement as a member of the School Board.

I WILL WORK FOR YOU TO: Promote excellence of the content, materials, and instruction our students receive, Encourage attention to mental health needs of our students including ongoing active anti-substance use curriculum, Provide SAFE and BULLY-FREE learning environments in our schools, Establish continuing dialogue between TUSD Board Members and the community members, including parents.

I ask for your help and support for my campaign. Donations would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

Sincerely, Terry Ragins
