Candidate for Governing Board Member; Torrance Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Hardworking parent volunteer, well-acquainted with local schools and school distict, wants to be on Torrance School Board. Please Vote, Parents!
Hello, my name is Terry Ragins. I'm a devoted parent and member of the Torrance community, here today to get your vote in the upcoming School Board election on November 4.

I am running for school board, because I firmly believe that educating our youth is THE most important job that we do! As Jackie Kennedy said, "If you bungle raising your children, I don't think whatever else you do matters very much." We can't risk bungling the upbringing of our children here in Torrance. For this reason, Torrance School District needs an active, strong school board member who knows the school district and the local school community.

That's where I come in. I CAN BE THAT PERSON. Parents need an assertive advocate who will represent your views, needs, and wants on the School Board. As a parent, I share your concerns about providing the best for our students. After all, the exceptional school system in Torrance is the reason why my husband and I purchased our home here 16 years ago. And today, the education of our two sons, both in North HS now, is still my main priority.

If I am elected to school board, my professional experience and know-how will work to benefit all Torrance students. As a Master's Degree occupational therapist and a former university instructor, I offer expertise in health-related issues, academic procedures, and instructional methods as well as concerns relating to the education of disabled and gifted students. My know-how as an active parent can also be put to work. I have spent my time in Torrance schools for the last 11 years. I have served thousands of hours, 8500 hours by conservative estimates, as a volunteer in various areas of the district. My contributions include: having served PTAs and School Site Councils at 3 schools; Torrance Council of PTAs; and the Torrance Education Foundation Board of Directors. I have been on MANY district curriculum and advisory committees including: Math, Science, and Health steering committees; GATE Advisory Committee; District Communication Council; and Drug Alcohol and Tobacco Education Advisory Committee. At the schools, I worked as a Library Director for 5 years, Art instructor, Accelerated Reader supervisor and as a literacy/math tutor. The PTA has recognized me with both Honorary Service AND Continuing Honorary Service Awards.

All this experience can be put to work for you! Over the last few years I have attended nearly all the school board meetings guaranteeing that I know the challenges ahead and how to represent the community effectively. I will be able to be an effective representative the day that I take office. I have done my homework and I am ready to go to work.

My goals are simple. I will promote excellence in our schools and ensure that our students have the best possible teachers, materials, and instruction. I will work to improve teacher/parent/School Board communication. I will insist that we provide safe, secure, and drug-free campuses. I will encourage increasing solicitation of grants to support art and music programs in our schools.

Vote for me, Terry Ragins, for School Board on November 4, 2003.
