Maintaining Quality Education and Balancing the Budget

By Michael L. "Mike" Hersek

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Bellflower Unified School District

Quality education also depends upon responsible decision-making within a balanced budget
During my time on the School Board we have maintained high quality education, improved our schools' facilities, avoided harmful program cuts, and kept spending within our budget. I believe that my long-time experience since 1964 as parent, teacher and Board Member helped me to make the tough decisions to do what was best for our students and community. There is a very real possibility that in the coming year, even tougher decisions might have to be made about spending priorities. I am fully committed to preserve and protect those programs and essential services that are nearest to the children and their education. This committment comes from my 34 years as a teacher in the classroom with students on a daily basis. They must always come first. As an experienced Board Member, I have already had to review the budget and participate in decison-making about spending priorities. Board Members often have to make tough decisions, but they must always be well-informed decisions that take into considereation what is best for students.
