MONROVIA SCHOOLS MUST BE IMPROVED

By Ed Gililland

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Monrovia Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
It only takes a quick look at the test scores from Monrovia schools to realize we must improve the academic achievement of our students. Monrovia is consistently among the lower level of schools when test score results are released. While there are many reasons and excuses for this, it must not be acceptable.
Monrovia Schools do have many successes to celebrate and many high performing students that make us proud. However, we must make improvements. We must insure the implementation of school plans that have recently been prepared to improve student achievement at each school in the Monrovia Unified School District.

We must insure the implementation of these plans to create improvements in school wide performance starting at the lower grades and continuing as the students progress through middle school and on into high school. We must monitor implementation of these plans to insure they achieve the defined goals for improvement. If they do not, we must modify the plans or the implementation to insure the programs work for students, teachers, and parents. We must also constantly look at programs and support mechanisms that can help our teachers and students achieve excellence.

Ed Gililland has been involved in the Monrovia Unified District School-wide Planning Team that developed many of the School Site Plans that now must be implemented. He is dedicated to insuring the plans are implemented and the academic achievement of our students is improved to the excellence they are capable of.

Ed's service and dedication to improving Monrovia Schools is well recognized. As an involved parent volunteer, Ed earned the District's recognition when he was named Golden Apple Recipient for 2002. (The Golden Apple Award is given each year to recognize one individual who has provided outstanding service to the District.) Continuation and acceleration of improvement at every Monrovia school is Ed's agenda.
