Smart Voter Official Statement for George P. Kranen

Candidate for
Member, City Council; City of Belmont

This is a copy of information submitted to elections officials by the candidate

GEORGE P. KRANEN
Age: 59
Occupation: Retired Project Manager

Education and Qualifications:
My education and qualifications are: Belmont resident and homeowner since 1992; community volunteer since 1997. I hold a B.A. in Mathematics from Pomona College.

I have been serving Belmont and its residents in volunteer capacities for nearly seven years. I'm now ready to serve you as a member of the City Council.

My civic life in Belmont started in 1997, when I served on the Open Space and Trails Advisory Committee that designed and mapped our city's outstanding hiking and biking trails system. In 1998 I became founding president of the San Juan Canyon Preservation Trust, a non-profit corporation dedicated to preserving the San Juan Canyon area of our city as open space for public recreation. In the Summer of 2000 I was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Commission. In November of last year I started serving on the Outdoor Recreation Task Force, joining fourteen other Belmont residents. This task force will recommend to the City Council this Summer how the city's Athletic Field Master Plan should be funded and implemented, and how Belmont's remaining open spaces should be preserved for public recreation.

If you elect me I will enthusiastically carry out the Outdoor Recreation Task Force's recommendations.

If you elect me I will strive to increase participation by our young people in Belmont's governance. While on the Parks and Recreation Commission I urged my fellow commissioners to seat two teen-age commissioners to better represent the interests of Belmont's children and young adults. Following the unanimous recommendation of my fellow commissioners, the City Council added two youth seats to the Commission and appointed two youth commissioners in March of 2001. Our youth commissioners have served the city well. The Arts Commission is now about to follow suit. I believe that Belmont should have a full-fledged Youth Commission to promote the full range of young people's interests to the City Council and to the city's staff departments. I believe in our young people. Among them are tomorrow's leaders. We should offer them opportunities to practice leadership.

Please join me for candidates' nights to find out where I and the other candidates stand on issues important to you. And please vote!

You are welcome to send me email: civicgeorge@earthlink.net or to call me: 650-593-7295.
