COMMITMENT

By John K. Pratt

Candidate for Council Member; City of Bellflower

This information is provided by the candidate
I am "passionate about our city" and proud of our recent accomplishments.
Thank you for taking time to read this. You are taking the initiative to find out about the candidates. You want to make an informed voting decision and I applaud you for your commitment to Bellflower. Thank you.

I have been a businessman in Bellflower for more than 15 years. I have seen our city go from a community that needed restoration to a vibrant home for our 75,000 residents. I have seen our downtown shops go from "near extinction" to a thriving group of merchants planning for progress. I have seen our teenagers recreational needs go from "near neglect" to skateboard parks, teen centers, and strong after school programs. I have seen our seniors find new housing opportunities and a senior center ready to open this month. Most of all, I have seen our crime rate plummet 47% since 1993.

Yes, I am passionate about our city and proud of our recent accomplishments. But, our planning cannot stop here. We must strategically plan for the future needs of our residents and our businesses. To be effective, this planning must be continuous, it must mirror the changing needs of the city and it must be reflected in the leadership of the city.

I have taken a leadership role in this community, winning a Bravo Award in 1998 for my commitment to Bellflower, I have served in a number of organizations including:

  • Chamber of Commerce
  • Bellflower's Alternative to Gangs
  • Kiwanis
  • Bethany Christian Reformed Church as well as my current term on the Bellflower City Council.

I have been endorsed by:
  • Supervisor Don Knabe
  • Chamber of Commerce President Alex Salazar
  • Bellflower School Board President Bill St. Marie
  • Former Assemblywoman Sally Havis
  • State Senator Betty Karnette
  • L.A. County Firefighters local 1014

I was recently asked what I was most proud of during my last four years in office. Immediately, I answered that I am most proud of having a city council that works together for the betterment of Bellflower. No private agendas! As mayor, I have worked diligently to create consensus. I believe that a unified council is essential for a unified city. We must continue to move in a unified direction for progress.

A wise person once defined progress as the activity of today and the assurance of tomorrow. I ask you to be a partner in the progress of our city. And, if you share my vision of "UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY" I ask for your vote in March 4th. I'm number 8 on the ballot.
