Puente Project: Students Today, Leaders Tomorrow

By Sylvia Munoz Schnopp

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Ventura County Community College District; Trustee Area 5

Innovative Program at Oxnard College Provides Mentoring Program for Latinos
I have been involved as a volunteer with the Puente Project at Oxnard College for more than 4 years. This program is a nationally-recognized program under the leadership of Margarita Corral and Anthony Rodriguez who work with Latino students to give them a "hand up" in college studies, development skills and higher education experience that allow them to be well-equipped for a transfer to a 4-year university.

The program is a win-win situation for Latino students. Each student has to apply and be accepted into a special English 101 class and personal enhancement class. Not only do they receive encouragement in these classes, but they are matched up with a mentor in the community, allowing the student to see the benefits of higher education through a mentor's career. I have been a participant in fundraising monies for student scholarships, reviewing essay submitted for scholarship consideration and a mentor.

We are now beginning to reap the rewards of our successful Puente Project with the young leaders returning to our community to give back what they have received. We recently discovered that a Channel Islands High School teacher was a past "Puentista", having received a B.A. and credentials to teach. This is how we will measure success in the Puente Project.

If you wish to discover more about Puente or volunteer, plese give me a call at 805 340-0057 or Margarita Corral at Oxnard College at 805 986-5800
