Downtown Modernization

By Alex Escobell

Candidate for Council Member; City of Oxnard

This information is provided by the candidate
Progress requires change, our downtown needs modernization so businesses can prosper and grow.
Downtown Oxnard is in need of more than a facelift, it needs renovation, new construction and a theater. Can we as a community agree to that? Must we see our youth and citizenry on their weekly shopping trips leave Oxnard to go to Ventura's mall or Camarillo's factory outlet stores? Funding is of course a great concern, for without it we cannot do very much else than dream and imagine, but it is from those hopes that reality can become real. I submit to you that I have that vision of a revitalized downtown for the taxpayer and consumer of this great city, that dream which cannot become real without effort and direction. It can be done, and it will be done. Whether the funding is from our tax base, or private sources or a combination of those two a vibrant and modern downtown Oxnard will be realized, I believe that and will assist in its coming to be.
Modernization also entails renewal of what is already present in our downtown area. I would be involved in both going and sending representatives of our city to other cities in order to return with ideas and photographs of what other urban areas have done to revitalize their older sections of town. We are not alone in this quest, nor are we the first city to be faced with this problem, we need to reach out and ask for help from those who have already done what we need to do. My plan for downtown modernization includes the following:

1. Information gathering from other cities who have modernized their downtown areas.

2. Informational sessions with downtown business owners so as to get them to buy-in and benefit from any moves to bring in new customers.

3. Funding sources sought and brought in.
