Why I'm Running For Area 1 Trustee for YCCD

By Joseph K. "Joe" Mitchell

Candidate for Member, Board of Trustees; Yosemite Community College District; Trustee Area 1

Some of the reasons that I want to remain on the Board now are the same as when I first got involved in 1997 (and indeed the same as when I first got involved with a K-8 Board in 1985). Other reasons have to do with the positive experiences I have had with faculty, staff and my fellow Trustees since I became involved. I have more to give back to my community now.
Education has always been very important to me: I am the first in my family to go to college. I obtained a Masters Degree from Cal State, Long Beach, but I started my college education at a community college, Long Beach City College. My wife is a graduate of Fresno City College and then went on to CSULB. Both of my daughters have attended Columbia College as part of their college education.

I see education as the key that can unlock doors of opportunity for all people. It is the great equalizer: people with the same goal but with widely different backgrounds can have an equal shot at their "prize" if they get a quality education.

I have been blessed to serve on Boards that affected my childrens' lives. I got involved with these Boards because of them. My decisions are based on what will help enhance the educational environment and experience for students, faculty and staff.

Now I have had the pleasure of interacting with those who work throughout the College District: they are intelligent, dedicated, talented and energetic. I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I have worked with them and discussed programs, approaches to learning, and the challenges faced in the classroom. I have learned a great deal from them and believe I have been able to use that knowledge to make better decisions on the Board.

I am past the steepest part of the learning curve for a Trustee and have been able to make more and better contributions back to my community over the past three years. My business background, actually working in the community, gives me a better understanding of the colleges' place and role in the community and what can be done.

I feel I am the best candidate for the position of Trustee for Area 1 of the Yosemite Community College District and would appreciate your vote.
