My Political Philosophy

Preserving choice is always preferable to imposed solutions. Laws enacted contrary to public sentiment and reason are direct threats to our rights, our democracy, and our civil order. Such laws debase and demean all laws, briefly strengthening the arm of government, but ultimately encouraging rejection of that government by the people from which the law derives its authority.

Laws and regulations must improve an element of our standard of living, rather than simply appealing to popular sentiment. Our standard of living is composed of a few basic elements; our safety, our rights, our environment, and our economic prosperity. At times these aspects work in synchrony, but often they offer conflicting demands. The principal challenge of leadership is improving individual aspects without harming others.

Laws must be simple enough to be understood by the community which they regulate. They must include effective management and enforcement provisions. They should strive to preserve existing rights, and whenever possible, extend those rights. When conflicts of rights arise, worker, personal and consumer rights should outweigh those of business. Business rights should outweigh those of government, to the fullest extent possible without violating the responsibility of government to enforce the rights of the public.
