Lathrop in unique in San Joaquin County in that we have more jobs than residents! The jobs associated with agriculture have been supplemented by industrial jobs. At present, the greater number of these jobs are in the warehouse and distribution sector. Few, at present, offer "head of household" pay checks. In most cases, the administrative and other well-paying jobs went to those holding them before the operation moved to Lathrop. But, as these employees retire or move on upward in the corporation, there will be opportunity for advancement by the local employees.
Lathrop's participation in the San Joaquin Partnership has been a vital part in bringing these companies here. Every city in the United States wants more and better jobs. The competition is fierce among the cities whenever a company announces plans for an expansion or a move. Lathrop's unique location and the Partnership's active representation has succeeded in bringing many new businesses and related jobs.
The dot com industry has fallen on hard times, but it has strengthened that industry's need to locate in less-expensive areas. In the River Isles area is the best (and last) location in San Joaquin County for this re-location. The master plan for that area includes a large piece of land reserved for a business park, larger than is available without buying and destroying existing structures anyplace else in the County.
Again it will require skill and negotiation to see this accomplished. I have served as Lathrop's representative on the Partnership board and have an established network with other members of that group.
