Citizen Advocacy

By Chris Christensen

Candidate for Council Member; City of La Mesa

This information is provided by the candidate
Chris Christensen, "Your Choice, Your Voice" For La Mesa City Council
I believe that it is the role of elected officials to act as advocates for the citizens they repesent. Government should never be afraid to propose ideas-even unpopular ideas like taxes-to the people, so the people can ultimately decide which action to take through the voting process. Ultimately, government serves the people, and government must-first and foremost- advocate ideas so the people can decide what they want through the voting process. "No taxation without representation" must be the watch phrase when proposing, supporting, or advocating tax increases, but the voters can rest assured they will always have the last word when it comes to taking money directly from their pockets. Government derives revenue and therefore is able to improve (theoretically) the lives of its citizens through general use of those funds; however, irresponsible or frivolous use of tax revenue for undefined purposes is unacceptable. Defined uses, including storm water mitigation and environmental preservation are part of the necessary (although admittedly sometimes unpopular) role that governmental agencies must assume for the greater good of society at large or the protection of the environment.
