Candidate for Director; Soquel Creek Water District

This information is provided by the candidate
Great strides toward improving water quality, reliability and fire suppression capabilities, and assuring that sufficient water will be available in emergencies have been made in accordance with the District's 10 year master plan.
The District has made sure new customers pay their fair share of infrastructure costs and supply needs to serve them. The current connection fees for a single family residential service have increased 57% to $4700. New customers pay their fair share to connect to the District. I have supported District policies to keep rates low. A policy to finance capital improvement projects on a pay as you go basis, rather than selling bonds and increasing debt.A policy not to collect tax revenues but to finance the operation of the District with revenue from the sale of water.Your taxes will not be increased to pay to operate the Soquel Creek Water District. We were one of the first agencies to install a series of coastal monitoring wells as an early warning system to detect if saltwater had advanced inland.Data from these wells, reviewed monthly by qualified hydrologists, along with our multi-faceted groundwater management plan, and comprehensive conservation program help protect our aquifer against saltwater intrusion. The Soquel Creek Water District can not rely solely on groundwater. A supplemental water supply must be developed to assure a reliable water supply for the current residents and future projections based on the County's current General Plan. To evaluate the feasibility of the various options, analyze the cost and impacts, and to continue to communicate with neighboring water agencies, we have retained some of the best professionals. Studies indicate a joint project with a neighboring agency provide the best financial and operational advantages. I will continue to support the involvement of community representatives and together we can develop a supplemental water supply in an economical, environmentally sensitive, and responsible manner.
