I am a practical person. I believe that all students must be able to read, write, and have math skills at grade level or above. This is the foundation for success in all other areas of education that follow. The SAT9 Test scores in our district have gone up consistently for the last five years in almost every grade level. In several of our "low performing" schools, we have made remarkable improvements. We are on the right tract and we must continue to stay the course.

Improved student performance is no accident. It depends on hiring and retaining the highest quality teachers and staff. We have improved teachers salaries 33% in the last four years. We have built a beautiful apartment complex, fully paid for by reduced teacher's rents, to retain teachers in that critical first five years. I am proud of our district's efforts in these areas.

Ten of our sixteen elementary schools have been remodeled and brought up to code with the rest scheduled to be completed with the next three years. We have completed two beautiful science buildings at Santa Clara & Wilcox High Schools, we have refurbished the athletic fields at both high schools, we are building new Performing Arts Centers at both high schools, and we have worked in cooperation with the City of Santa Clara on the new Youth Activities Center at Cabrillo Intermediate School. We just opened the beautiful Alviso Community Center at Mayne School which was a successful partnership with the City of San Jose. We will be building the new Don Callejon K-8 Elementary School by 2005. These facilities provide the learning environment necessary for a quality educational experience.

Test scores are up, teacher salaries are up, facilities have been improved. I am proud to represent you on the Board. I hope you will reelect me to your school board so that I can continue the good work we have started. I ask for your vote on November 5th.
