Educational Partnerships

By Althea Polanski

Candidate for Council Member; City of Milpitas

This information is provided by the candidate
We have the unique distinction in Milpitas of having the same boundaries as the school district. It assists us in initiating partnerships that other city's wish they could emulate.
Educational partnerships are on every candidates list. For the past 19 years, I have developed many partnerships with the City of Milpitas. In 1987, in conjunction with the City Council, I implemented the DARE program as a joint city/school district project. Since then we have added Milpitas Resource Officers at our two middle schools and a Police Science Class at Milpitas High School. There is not only a police presence at all of our campuses in Milpitas but we have provided our students the opportunity to get to know our law enforcement officials differently.

Through my association with the Milpitas Foundation for Education, a $40,250 grant was awarded to continue the "Suggested Routes To School" program and safety assemblies at our public schools.

The Milpitas Sports Center was made possible by negotiations between myself as a member of the school board and members of the city council. The school district had the opportunity to sell the portion of the Ayer Campus but made a conscious decision to seek an agreement with the city. The result has been an exceptional center for the citizens of Milpitas.

There are many other examples of partnerships but I do believe it will be an opportunity to initiate a summit to include representatives of the City, School District, and Business community to explore specific projects to benefit all our public schools; i.e. adopt a school, grants, expanded cable TV access, etc.
