ACADEMIC SUCCESS

By Pam Walker

Candidate for Board Member; Ocean View School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Ocean View is a leader in success for students.
OVSD was the first district in Orange County to fully implement the most significant educational program in decades. On the first day of school 1996, all 1st-3rd grade classrooms had 20 or fewer students in them. In 1997 when the program was extended, all kindergarten classes were reduced. We saw immediate results from teachers having more time to assess and intervene with students. THIS IMPORTANT PROGRAM MUST BE PROTECTED AND EXPANDED.

In 2001 all schools in the district met or exceeded their Academic Performance Index goals with Oak View increasing by 100 points. Teachers work hard for their students and encouragement from parents and staff influence students to test their best.

Our academic success has led to many awards for our schools. 14 of 15 schools have received California Distinguished School recognition. Marine View Middle School was one of only 175 schools nationwide to be recieve the prestigious National Blue Ribbon School Award.

Music instruction has been linked to improved academic performance. We have established music programs at all schools. All 4 middle schools have vocal and instrumental music programs. With the new gymnasium/auditoriums being built on each middle school campus, there will be a venue for performances by these groups.

We have place over 1600 computers in classrooms. Upper grade classes have state-of-the-art networked computers with filtered Internet access. These computers are used for research, processing of information and testing.

With new federal programs being implemented that pose significant challenges to school districts, it is vitally important to stay informed and monitor changes to curriculum. I have been on the board for 8 years and feel this experience will be sorely needed as these programs come to fruition.
