New and Improved Schools

By Jan Wagner

Candidate for Board Member; Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District

Our newly-adopted Facilities Master Plan will modernize all existing schools and build three new elementary schools, a new middle school and a new comprehensive high school.
After over twenty years of lobbying, cajoling, and serving on committees to address school overcrowding and deterioration in PYLUSD, I was instrumental in developing, approving, and implementing a strong Facilities Master Plan. The plan has six parts:

State Modernization Funds
We moved agressively to receive state approval to modernize all but three of our schools. 20% to 40%of the cost will be paid locally, and 60% to 80% will be paid by the state.

Local Bond Funds
Together we approved Measure Y, our local bond issue. Measure Y funds will provide PYLUSD's 20% - 40% share of the modernization plan, modernize our three newer schools, plus provide the local matching funds necessary to access state school bond funds to construct five new schools.

California State School Bond Funds
Don't forget to vote in favor of the state bond issue. It will more than double our local bond funds. Together, state and local bond funds will build an elementary and a middle school in Placentia, build an elementary school in Yorba Linda, and purchase land and core buildings for a high school in Yorba Linda.

Yorba Linda Redevelopment Funds
Our successful lawsuit against the Yorba Linda Redevelopment Agency will pay to construct the kind of high school we all want for our children, with modern technology, stadium and athletic faciliites, and fine arts facilities. Over the next thirty years, redevelopment funds will also be available to eliminate portable classrooms, upgrade technology, build joint use arts and athletic venues, and provide for future maintenance or modernizations.

Local Developer Funds
Vista Del Verde Elementary School in Yorba Linda will be built through an agreement with the developer in lieu of fees. We will continue to work with developers as growth continues in our communities to provide their fair share of providing schools.

Fiscal Management
We are building a warehouse/ training facility with the district revenues we currently use to rent a warehouse, saving millions of dollars over time.

These projects are significant community investments that will require careful utilization of resources and personnel. I remain committed to every project and to spending the time neccessary to provide appropriate oversight.
