Smart Voter Full Biography for Steve Vargas

Candidate for
Council Member; City of Brea

Councilman Vargas is serving a four-year term on the Brea City Council, he is up for re-election, Nov. 5, 2002. A public affairs professional, he is President of Vargas Public Affairs, an economic development and affordable housing consulting firm. Steve is also the principal partner of SCV Construction Corps, a general contracting company specializing in residential remodel and commercial tenant improvement work. His government service includes; Senior Community Officer for Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration, representing the Governor of Puerto Rico in twelve Western States. He is a member of Congressman Gary Miller's, Veteran's Advisory Committee and Secretary of the Orange County (OC) Library Advisory Council. He served locally as executive assistant to a OC Board of Supervisor, OC Veterans Advisory Council and OC Housing & Community Development Advisory Council.

Councilman Vargas' previous work experience includes 15 years in the nuclear industry as a nuclear operator and quality control technician, working throughout the United States and international duty in the former Yugoslavia. His corporate experience includes seven years with Southern California Edison, promoted to Employee Programs Supervisor and non-profit liaison, responsible for charitable contributions, volunteer programs and grant administration. He has served on numerous non-profit boards including Placentia Boys & Girls Club, the Latino Advisory Board for Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. He is a founding incorporator of Roundtable for Food Professionals (RFP) and United Veteran Organizations of Orange County (UVO.)

Councilman Vargas' educational background includes: Bachelor of Science Degree work in Nuclear Technology, Univ. of the State of New York; A.S. in Electro-Mechanical Drafting & Design, Palomar College and A.S. in Maintenance Technology, Gavilan College. Councilman Vargas completed six years military service as a navy diver on the fast-attack submarine, USS Shark, SSN-591. He was the Navy Boxing Champion for the State of New York two years in a row and is a supporter of high school wrestling and amateur boxing.
