Candidate Statement

By Ruth M. Vreeland

Candidate for Councilmember; City of Monterey

This information is provided by the candidate
RUTH M. VREELAND Council member, City of Monterey

I have had the privilege to teach in Monterey for 33 years. Our children grew up here, and I am deeply dedicated to serving all the citizens of Monterey. Working together, we have accomplished much to keep our historical Monterey special. There is still work to be done, and I look forward to working with you.

KEEPING MONTEREY SAFE Public safety is my highest priority for the city. I'm dedicated to protecting salaries and funding for police, fire, health, and other essential LOCAL services.

KEEPING MONTEREY SOLVENT As your council member, I have made sure that the city budget is balanced every year. Even in these tough economic times, the city has not cut into its reserves.
I want to continue to work with the business association to provide economic vitality and support. The Main Street Program involves the businesses, property owners, residents, and city representatives. This collaborative model is something I want to spread throughout the city. Guiding efforts to provide affordable housing continues to be a key work area. I'm proud that our City has been in the forefront with creative public/private partnerships that have resulted in actual homes.

KEEPING MONTEREY SCENIC We need to finish the Window to the Bay, part of our efforts to keep Monterey scenic. Our precious quality of life has to be protected. I want to continue to provide places throughout the city for residents to enjoy the land, beach, and open space. Protecting our historical assets and beauty remains a vital goal for me.

KEEPING MONTEREY SPECIAL We are all proud of our Neighborhood Improvement Program that turns tourism money back to the neighborhoods. We have many project still to do, and I want to make sure that neighborhoods remain a top priority. The City continues to explore programs and provide assistance to the school district. I am also eager to involve our youth in the Youth Task Force, the Community of Caring, and the youth volunteer programs. Likewise, Monterey has developed nationally recognized partnerships with our military community to cut costs and keep our installations here.
Communication is vital. Along with the City Focus newsletter, I have been a part of the efforts to create public access TV. Now residents can watch council and other meetings LIVE. Citizens, non-profits and other organizations can use the PEG channels (Public, Education, Government) as a venue to express their voice.

I would be honored to continue to represent you on the Monterey City Council to keep our city SAFE, SOLVENT, SCENIC and SPECIAL.
