Jeff Haferman Biography

Dr. Jeff Haferman was born and raised in Prior Lake, Minnesota on July 19, 1964. There he helped his parents with their business and graduated from public high school (serving as Student Council President) in 1982.

Jeff has a Bachelor of Science degree in Math and Computer Science from the University of Chicago (1986), and a Masters (1992) and PhD (1995) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Iowa. Jeff held a prestigious NASA Global Change Fellowship from 1993-1995, and worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, Maryland) in 1995-1996 on the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission.

Jeff has a strong financial background, having worked at The University of Chicago Office of Information Systems Planning (part of the Budget Office) and for O'Conner and Associates at the Chicago Board of Trade (1986-1989).

He and his wife Joyce have lived in Monterey since 1997. Jeff now works for the United States Navy at Fleet Numerical here in Monterey, and he chairs a tri-agency (NASA/Air Force/Navy) research panel.

From 1998-2002, Jeff served the community as Vice-President of the Old Town Neighborhood Association, where he led efforts to draft the Old Town Neighborhood Area Plan, which describes the neighborhood vision of Old Town over the next decade.

Dr. Haferman believes his experiences living and working all over the country will allow him to bring a broad "big-picture" perspective to Monterey City Council. He has served as a voice of reason and community advocate over the last several years, and has helped many of his friends and neighbors in appearances before the City Council, Planning Commission, Historic Preservation Commission, and Architectural Review Commission. He knows the City Staff well, and can work in cooperation with the current council and commissions.

His background in finance and engineering are important assets that he would bring to City Council, and his background in environment (at NASA) and business (with his parents, and at the Chicago Board of Trade) are a special blend of skills that are especially important for the unique character of Monterey.
