Measure P, Height Initiative

No on Height Initiative
Measure P - Height Initiative

Qualified NO! The height initiative is probably the most controversial local measure on this year's ballot. It comes as a reaction to our current housing crisis as well as concerns about density and neighborhood preservation. Homeowners are trying to protect their quality of life, and are looking for a fair and consistent zoning process.

The height initiative is not the answer to these worries and will have a negative impact on both future housing construction and the creation of more affordable housing units, particularly for our growing number of renters, students, and senior citizens. Although Berkeley should not have to bear a disproportionate amount of the County's new housing, we must contribute our fair share. At the same time, our critical need for housing must be balanced with the needs of our neighborhoods.

Moreover, the City's zoning process and elected officials must be held accountable in making developers deliver on their agreements concerning affordable units in exchange for height increases.
