By Cathie Kelly

Candidate for Member, Governing Board; New Haven Unified School District

To the Editor, Argus (publication refused): Pop philosopher Alfred E. Newman once remarked that when it comes to absorbing information, some people are like blotters: They soak it all up, but they get it all backwards. This is clearly demonstrated in the Argus' lukewarm endorsement of Gwen Estes and Barbara Aro-Valle for the New Haven school board. Cathie Kelly has, by Argus' own estimate, lived up to the promise of her endorsement four years ago. Unfortunately she has usually supported Superintendent McKenna, and therefore she must go. Gwen Estes' "difficult" "abrasivness" is often a distraction from the best interests of her constituents, for which she was praised in her previous endorsement. However, she opposes the Superintendent, and therefore she should stay. Jonas Dino, the Argus' choice in the last board election, remains a "disappointment," yet along with this year's "untested" newcomer also favors firing the Superintendent, therefore they, too, receive the rubber stamp of approval. In the end, a board dismissed as "dysfunctional" is to become more so, all in the cause of canning the Superintendent. What a waste, especially since this won't solve the budget crisis, won't ease overcrowding at Logan, won't guarantee passage of a bond or parcel tax, won't elevate student performance--won't accomplish anything, in fact, except to serve up the unjust desserts sought in error and in vain by angry parents and teachers. "Count the cost" indeed, if you must. I'll stick to promises fulfilled and cast my vote, once again and proudly, for Cathie Kelly. Tom Sims
