Improvements to LARPD

By David M. Furst

Candidate for Director; Livermore Area Recreation and Park District

LARPD should improve its website and hire a professional to write its grant funding requests
Although, in general, LARPD is very well managed, it is always possible to improve. Two areas that need change are the current website and LARPD's attention to grant writing. 1. More and more people are finding out information through the world wide web. As the emphasis shifts from printed material to the internet, LARPD must keep pace. Currently we have a good website but it could be improved. For example, the up-coming agenda for all Board meetings should be put on the website much earlier than it typically is now, and the minutes of the Board meetings needs to go onto the website more quickly. 2. As it is now, individual staff, usually the two superintendents write grant proposals to attain funding for various projects. However, with the State of California taking half of the LARPD's property tax money (3.6 million dollars a year), LARPD should hire a professional grant writer to search for and write the funding requests. While this will entail an initial start up cost, this person's salary can be paid for when the grants are funded. In addition, I believe each Director should have their email address and phone number made available to the public so that anyone with any concerns or comments can easily get in touch with any of the Directors AND receive a timely answer from the Director. Currenly this is not happening, but if we are to be responsive to the people we represent, our contact information must be easily accessable and we must make sure to answer any inquiries.
