Bikeways and Trails are needed

By David M. Furst

Candidate for Director; Livermore Area Recreation and Park District

This information is provided by the candidate
An organized system of bikeways and trails will allow residents to safely comute to work and explore the area
Information taken from the Park and Recreation Planning Survey is not as clear cut as they may seem. While the Executive Summary of the Park and Recreation Planning Survey, conducted in April of 2002, seemed to show that the "trails" were not well used, the Summary also stated that when residents go to the parks they most often "walk, hike or relax", but where can they walk or hike except but on the "trails"? What did the 620 people who answered the survey understand by the word trails, did they differentiate bike paths from trails? We do not know. However, the Vison Project Final Report (January 2002) includes a survey of over 6000 Livermore residents. Sixty percent said they wanted MORE trails. The consensus of the cycling community as expressed by the representatives on the Livermore Bikeways and Trails Committee said that bike paths and trails were very important to them for comuting to work and for recreational rides. The running community in Livermore is also interested in having a path/trails connection to the various area parks such as Del Valle and Shadow Cliffs. The conclusion is that an organized trail system is desired by the residents.
