1. What would you do to serve the youth who are ending up in the juvenile justice system?

Answer from Shirley Issel:

The State of California provides significant funding that targets just this population. Currently we do not have a local program to serve our troubled youth. Instead, we rely upon the County to provide these services in Juvenile Hall and County operated Community Day Schools. I think we can do a better job for some of our youth by using the rich resources in our community to develop programs that reflect best practices in the field. As a clinical Social Worker I know that we could do a better job of helping these kids than we are now doing, Over the past four years I have advocated for just such a program and I will continue doing so until I succeed.

Answer from Lance Montauk:

Try to teach them to read, write, and do math.

Answer from Sean P. Dugar:

I think the first step is to prevent youth from entering the juvenile justice system. We must bring together all sides of the juvenile justice system and have a conversation on how we can prevent young people from entering the justice system. The second step is to work with those who have already entered the juvenile justice system. I think if we can setup at the county level a educational mentorship program letting college students mentor younger persons in the justice system.
