As a candidate for California's 75th Assembly District, Greg Stein brings more than nine years of public policy experience and community leadership to his campaign.

Stein most recently served as the Interim Director of Research Policy at the University of California at San Diego, where he was responsible for developing and implementing strategies to enhance the university's efforts to advance basic research in biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering, and then utilize government, non-government, and corporate networks to transfer that research into products which cure disease, enhance our quality of life, and maintain our strategic forces.

Previously, Stein served as District Director for Congressman Brian Bilbray where he was responsible for overseeing the district staff and serving as the main liaison between the community, local and state officials. Prior to this appointment, Stein acted as Bilbray's Senior Legislative Aide covering issues such as welfare reform, electricity deregulation and energy policy, tax reform, university and corporate research, defense and international relations, trade, and telecommunications deregulation. Over the years, Stein worked on numerous significant issues for San Diego residents including:

Creating a multi-agency task force to write implementation procedures for the Cross-Border Pollution Reduction Act authored by Bilbray and signed into law by President Clinton.

Providing a strategic role in the adoption of:

1. The Beach Bill, the first comprehensive water quality-testing bill in the history of the United States, which will help prevent ocean water pollution and protect our public health.

2. The landmark Telecommunications Deregulation Act, which has helped provide a competitive environment to provide consumers with unmatched services while reducing prices.

3. The Welfare Reform and Personal Responsibility Act #the first effort in helping provide a "hand-up" for people of need in moving from welfare to the workforce, restoring hope and dignity to millions.

4. Tariff reduction legislation, which sped the delivery of VIRACEPT # a revolutionary AIDS drug # to market.

5. An amendment to the McKinney Act to allow local government and the community the right to determine the most appropriate re-use of surplus military bases.

In 1998, Stein managed Congressman Bilbray's successful re-election effort where he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the campaign, interfacing with the media, community and political leadership, and the entire campaign team. Not only did his efforts increase voter turnout in key precincts to provide the margin of victory, but the campaign outperformed all other Republican candidates in his district by up to double-digit margins.

Before his Bilbray appointment, Stein managed similar issues for Congressman Jay Dickey of Arkansas, where he was instrumental in forming a bipartisan, staff-level Pro-NAFTA quick response team to assist in meeting Member's specific concerns regarding the agreement. In this capacity, Stein went to Mexico City to discuss NAFTA implementation with the Mexican Cabinet and several of Mexico's Congressional Leaders. Stein also managed the office's participation as a beta test site for Congressional email communications, and co-wrote recommendations for House Internet and Email procedures that have, today, helped millions of citizens interact with their legislators.

Outside of his professional duties, Stein founded and chaired an associate board, and sits on the full board for San Diego Youth and Community Services, a non-profit organization which seeks to assist homeless and at-risk youth develop life-skills, keep free of substance abuse, provide mental health assistance and counseling, and support of the foster parent network.
