Fight Terrorism and Fraud

By Michael K. "Mike" Schmier

Candidate for Attorney General; State of California; Democratic Party

This information is provided by the candidate
I will fight terrorism from both international terrorists and corporations who commit major fraud.
I pledge to work with the federal government to increase security at our airports and other critical facilities. I will work with them to improve communication and working relations between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and the California National Guard. But, international terrorism is not the only threat to the state. Some large corporations, such as Enron and Global Crossing have committed major frauds, wreaking financial terror on many Americans. The Enron bankruptcy affected not only wealthy stockholders, but many, many average Californians including teachers and state employees. The University of California pension system lost $145 million in the Enron collapse. The state schoolteachers' pension fund lost $49 million, and the state employees' pension fund (CALPERS) lost $40 million. I will vigorously pursue legal remedies against those companies to hold them accountable for their actions, and to obtain any moneys that may be available to compensate those claimants. Another type of fraud I will target is the fraud committed against senior citizens, who, because of their normally trusting nature, are often victimized by unscrupulous door-to-door salespersons and telemarketers.
