Bottom up reform of education
Public education is a disaster. I took community college classes until I was close to fifty years old. I am ashamed of the ignorance I found in young people. Little or no knowledge of U.S or world history, civics, or geography. This is not the fault of the students as I found them bright and wanting to know. Only when local control of schools is restored will this change. For a parent to be involved he or she needs to feel they can make a difference. I have been told this will not work because we need the professionals. Well, the professionals gave us ubonics, social promotion, whole langurage, and new math. Professionals are people we hire to advise us not to control us. Will the government fix the system if we just leave them alone? During the last year of the Clinton administration the Department of Education "lost" between 350 and 400 million dollars. The first year of the Bush administration that department was "punished" by getting an increase of over 11 percent in it's budget. That was the largest budget increase of any department other than the Defense Department. I will only ad the litercy rate of our nation has gone down in a steady trend sense the begining of public education.
