Low Cost Automobile Insurance program

By Thomas M. "Tom" Calderon

Candidate for Insurance Commissioner; State of California; Democratic Party

This information is provided by the candidate
The Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program is a critical consumer protection element within the department of Insurance. I am committed to expanding this program. For example, out of one million uninsured motorists in California, only 1,000 policies have been sold in the last months. Clearly, the product needs to be improved and more community outreach is needed to deliver the product to eligible Californians.

Strangely enough, the current program may actually punish the working poor people it was designed to help. I see three fundamental problems with its current structure:

Lack of public information and community outreach

Lengthy and confusing process to purchase the product

Too expensive

I would like to see the price of this policy reduced so that it is available to those whom it was intended to serve. Additionally, consumers must be assured that they can sign up for these products without fear of facing discriminatory treatment.
