Instant Run-off elections

By Patricia J. "Pat" Gray

Candidate for Member, Green Party County Council; County of San Mateo

This information is provided by the candidate
With prioritized voting no run-off elections are needed.
Our county needs new voting machines that are capable of Instant Run-off elections. By this method, voters mark their ballots in order of their preference for candidates.

When the votes are counted, and no candidate receives a majority, the ballots are recounted. The ballots of the lowest ranking candidate are recounted first. Disregarding the first choice of the voter, the second choice of that voter is added to the count of the second choice candidate. This process continues until one candidate receives a majority vote.
