The better plan to rid our city's litter problem.

By Jose Posadas

Candidate for Mayor; City of San Jose

This information is provided by the candidate
Litter is not only a physical blight on our city, it is also a psychological blight on our neighborhoods. Blight, in the form of ever-present litter, devalues our neighborhoods and overwhelms our senses. Being free from litter is a quality-of-life issue and as Mayor I will embark on a comprehensive and effective anti-litter campaign.
Step #1- I will provide funds for a comprehensive litter cleanup and education campaign through partnerships with schools, neighborhood associations and neighborhood groups.

Step #2- This campaign will consist of two parts: A) An educational campaign B) A cleanup program

Educational Campaign- The educational campaign will be done through partnerships with schools and the non-profit organization, San Jose Beautiful. Educational materials will consist of literature in multiple languages, educational videos and classroom presentations beginning with K-6 grades.

Cleanup Program- The cleanup program will be done in partnerships with neighborhood associations and neighborhood groups. Associations and neighborhood groups will be consulted to identify where litter is prevalent and the City will commit to providing trash receptacles, regular service pickup for them, and targeted cleanup enforcement.

Street Sweeping Component- The street sweeping program will be aligned with this campaign so that no streets continue to be unswept due to cars not being moved during sweeping days. Neighborhood associations and groups will be asked to participate in the street sweeping notification process so that their neighbors know to remove their vehicles during sweep times. Enforcement will be coordinated with the street sweeping contractors so that parked vehicles in violation will be cited and repeat violators towed on the spot.

Community Service Component- In coordination with schools there will also be available the opportunity for students to perform community service hours as part of this campaign.
