Expand and upgrade San Jose parks

By Dale Detwiler

Candidate for Mayor; City of San Jose

This information is provided by the candidate
Provide new park facilities in San Jose, expand the facilities and upgrade maintenance in our existing parks, and work for better access to our regional parks.
San Jose has a shortage of parks and other recreational facilities in some parts of our city. The Santa Teresa and Almaden Valley do not have park facilities proportionate to their needs. Some parks do not have staffing or maintenance to adequately serve the area residents. Alum Rock Park has had the main entrance on Alum Rock Avenue closed for several years due to a road failure. Alum Rock Park also has locked rest rooms in some picnic areas for several days each week.

Regional parks owned by the County or the State are sometimes inaccessable or have reservation system that work against families that cannot make reservations ahead of time.

My priorities for San Jose are:

1. Build new parks of appropriate size and facilities in those areas now underserved.

2. Increase the funding for additional staff, facility upgrades, and increased maintenance at all parks.

3. Rebuild the main entrance on Alum Rock Avenue to Alum Rock Park and increase parking facilities in the park.

4. Work with the State to provide auto access to Coe State Park for camping and picnicing

5. Work with the County to provide better family access to County parks

6. Work to eliminate entrance fees to all parks.
