Lise Pearlman, 52, the first Presiding Judge of the State Bar Court, graduated from Yale University and Boalt Hall. She clerked for the California Supreme Court, was a Teaching Fellow at Stanford Law School and practiced civil litigation for thirteen years with two Oakland firms. Recognized as the first woman sole managing partner of an established California law firm, she is also the co-author of a book on jury instructions in plain English and a lecturer on legal ethics.


An ethics expert and mediator, she now chairs the Alameda County Bar committee which publishes guidelines for courtroom behavior. She has taken extensive judicial education courses and was appointed a judge pro tempore for the Alameda County Superior Court. In 2001, as President of Women Lawyers of Alameda County, she worked to create children's waiting rooms in the courts. She previously chaired the Oakland Public Ethics Commission which the voters established as an independent watchdog to assure fairness, openness, honesty and integrity in city government.


Lise and her husband have lived in Alameda County for thirty years, raising three daughters. Her many community activities include being President of the Oakland Youth Chorus, fundraiser for scholarships for disadvantaged students, Camp Fire Leader and Bobby Sox Manager.
