Expecting Excellence

By Frank J Pinski

Candidate for Board Member; Norwood City School District

This information is provided by the candidate
A sense of urgency is needed to address the district's poor performance on the state report cards.
The school district has embarked on a program where the students are told that they are expected to excel. This is a very lofty goal. I hope that we as a community can live up to this promise and provide the means for our students to attain such high levels. However, what we are doing now does not seem to be working. The State of Ohio has placed our school district on academic watch because our students are not achieving at satisfactory levels. Our district's report cards have evidenced the decline in the performance of our students; we met 50% of the state standards on the 1998 report card; this fell to 42% on the latest report card. I believe that a sense of urgency is required if we plan to rectify this problem.
