Crime/Police

By Michael A. Howell

Candidate for Trustee; Township of Symmes

This was a close decision. I feel that this community needs a recreation center and pool to give families and kids a place to play. But more importantly is keeping crime at the lowest levels possible.
We all enjoy some of the lowest crime statistics in the area. I'm sure most of us know a neighbor that has had damage to or stolen property. Our police department is a contract deal with the Hamilton County Sheriff's department. These officers do a fantastic job. But the township should be doing more to support them.

We need to bolster our faltering neighborhood watch program. This could be an important tool for the police if used to its potential. The township could be used to support and promote this program. This could also be a communication tool for the township. And give the township a community leadership tree.

The radios used by our police do not cover the whole township. There are areas that area considered weak or dead zones. These have been areas long known to be lacking in coverage. These areas could, under the wrong circumstances, place residents and police in a position of danger. If caught in one of these areas the officer cannot call for assistance. This could be a car wreck or an officer under attack.

The township should also try to retain key experienced officers. It makes sense to keep experienced personal in any job.

I also would hope that a community center would help keep crime down.
