Symmes Flooding Problems

By Michael A. Howell

Candidate for Trustee; Township of Symmes

This information is provided by the candidate
The township has delayed long enough. The flooding, in my area has been going on for years. These 3 steps should solve this, for all of the townships problem areas.
I am sure that everyone hates sitting in traffic. Maybe the only thing worse would be to have all of your beloved personal belongings turned into mound of muddy trash because of flooding. It could be sitting in the house and the worst thing possible is the sound of rain falling on the roof. Could you imagine getting up every hour to look out the window to see where the water level is in your yard?

There are residents and neighbors this has happened to. The township has been aware of these problems for years. If these would have been addressed from the start we wouldn't in this situation today.

I feel that with these steps these problems can be fixed. It will take time and lots of money but I feel it can be done. Step one is to map all the creeks, drains ditches and culverts in the areas prone to flooding. In some cases this has been done. Next is to hire and engineer, or use one from the county, to calculate rain tolerances in these areas and what it will take to upgrade the system to handle this amount of rain. Lastly is to work with the county, state and federal agencies to find a way to help pay for what will be a massive project.

The township alone cannot do this, in itself. However this could have been done in stages and well underway.
