R. Brian Shockley Education Trustee Candidate

Citizens of Oakdale;

After numerous changes that I have seen in the school environment as well as changes in attitudes towards education in general, both from students and from educators alike, I have decided to run for Trustee in area #2. I can state, that if you, the constituency of Oakdale, elect me I will strive to return excellence, common-sense family oriented values, and mutual respect back to our school system.

As a parent of a young child, I feel that we all have responsibilities that demand we take an active role in the education. The focus should be toward enhancing the future opportunities of our children, whether that student wishes to achieve a vocational, two-year degree or a four-year degree. We need to get involved by setting expectations and goals for our kids to let them unlock their fullest potentials. Encourage them, coach them, direct them, and focus them.

As an educator, I feel that we need better materials and resources to enhance the educational experiences for all concerned. I have seen too many students graduate only to be hurt when entering Junior College or Vocational Colleges due to the lack of discipline, commitment, or knowledge. These same students are testing low in math and verbal batteries statewide.

I stand for Educational Vouchers, ending social promotion, year-end testing, and forming responsible accountable partnerships between students, parents, and educators. Here are some of the areas of which I have concerns in:

◦ Construction of a new senior high school

◦ Year-end testing to move into the next grade level, before state recommendations

◦ Multiple track disciplines for high school students; diploma, tech/trade/vocational, college

◦ Increased on campus safety patrols, security presence and enforcement

◦ Even distribution of monies for ALL extra-curricular events

◦ Creating a college-enhancing atmosphere for senior students; Seniors would follow a schedule like college courses

◦ Create student accountability & responsibility for actions, words, and deeds

◦ Create a High School Diploma guarantee program

◦ Return the responsibility of education to the teachers in addition create accountability standards for teaching requirments

So please join me in this alliance. Let us, the Citizens of Oakdale choose to take a proactive role in the creation and assistance to forge this promise of quality education.
