Apprenticeships/internships/Computer centers and literacy courses.

By Fel Anthony Amistad

Candidate for Board Member; San Mateo Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
There should be additional elective classes like computer classes. Ensure corroboration among students, apprenticeships and community businesses.
While it is important that students excel in computer courses, it is also important that they read and write at their proper academic level. Assessments and testing of student achievement should be used as a tool to evaluate future achievement.

Advanced students who score well should be allowed more advanced electives. They should spend more time on enriching courses like computer science, social science and other electives. Students should mature into advanced placement classes or graduate to advanced literacy and college level courses.

For the students who fall through the cracks and are left behind, schools should provide more support and mentoring. Tutoring students, especially in math and English, should be fostered.

I will ensure that District school students receive every oppotunity to partake in work internships with Chamber of Commerce businesses during summer and post-graduate periods. I will corroborate apprenticeships with capable students to improve their "working world" skills.

Thank you. FEL ANTHONY AMISTAD in 2001.
