Candidate for
Board Member; Sunnyvale School District

This information is provided by the candidate

I grew up in western Virginia and Maryland, graduating from Radford College in 1973 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. I moved to northern California that same summer. I am a 26-year resident of Sunnyvale. My husband, Tom Boyer, and I have lived in our current home for 23 years. Our three sons attended Sunnyvale School District elementary and middle schools.

I worked at Hewlett Packard for eight years in cost accounting, as a systems analyst, and as a trainer before retiring to raise our sons. In addition to my volunteer work within the Sunnyvale School District, I have worked with Nursing Mothers Counsel and participated in Sunnyvale Public Safety's first Community Academy. Currently I volunteer at Fremont High School, as well as serving on the Bay Area ALS (Lou Gerhig's Disease) Association's Patient and Family Services Committee.

As a parent in the district for 16 years, I assisted in classrooms, served on the PTA/PTSA, and volunteered as a Family Math instructor and trainer for the district. I was honored as the Cumberland School Volunteer of the Year for 1990 and received three district "Good Apple" awards for my work with Kids Can Write, Family Math, and our first bond issue.

In 1996, I co-chaired the Measure A School Facilities Bond Issue. With the help of excellent volunteers, we were able to secure funding for much-needed school renovations. The district is currently on a fast-track schedule to complete the improvements to all of our facilities.

I have served on the Board for eight years, three of them as president. I believe I can continue to contribute to education in our district through my leadership skills and my detailed understanding of the role of a board member. We are on a new path towards educational excellence; I would like the chance to help us achieve it.
