Key issues facing the District

By Susan F. Schmidt

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Tamalpais Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
I think the board must follow through on the commitment it has made to students, staff and the community to implement the bond as quickly, efficiently and effectively as possible. Knowing that there will be disagreements and unforeseen problems along the way, I think the board will have to insure that there is excellent two-way communication; that the administration is responsive to concerns; that the administration is quick to respond to problems and opportunities; that the community stays positive and focused on the goal; and that the sacrifices of the students and staff in the next four years are acknowledged and minimized.

I fully support all of the District's Tasks and Objectives 2001-2003, which I sincerely believe will address many of the important issues before the board currently, including student and staff stress. I believe their implementation will support the students in meeting graduation requirements and their personal goals, and the staff in delivering instruction and support.

I think retention and attraction of quality teachers is a major concern in this community. I support the District's current efforts to participate in partnerships with the community to provide teachers with low-interest mortgages and the development of affordable housing. I think Board policy on standards of student behavior, sensitivity to teacher workload, modernized facilities, and professional support and development opportunities, help create an inviting work environment.
