Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Paul L. Helzer

Candidate for
Governing Board Member; Bellflower Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate

After visiting the schools and talking to my constituents, I was privileged to hear the wants and needs of our parents and teachers. Amoung the many problems facing our School District, these are my 'Top Priorities':

1. Communication and Respect between Parents, Teachers, and the School Board:

For too long the Board seems to be at war with the teachers. We have lost many good teachers, principals and classified employees! Why? Why do we have so many lawsuits against our School District? If elected I will work to rebuild the bridges and start communicating with the people who elected us to serve.

2. Over crowding in our classrooms:

Test scores and overall performance are known to be higher with smaller numbers of students per class. So far we have implemented class size reductions in grades K-3. I would like to see this extended through grade 6. Economists tell us we are in for another 'baby boom' are our schools ready to face the increase?

3. Safety and Security:

Re-evaluation on many different levels are needed. Drop-off and pick-up areas need to be made more safe and efficient. Traffic control needs to be improved. We need better control over the visitors to our campuses. We must work hard to insure that our campuses are safe and secure inside and out. Our athletic fields, playyards and equipment must be in good shape. Our emergency and disaster plans need revamping and must be brought up to speed in order to cope with the current threats that face our nation and our homes.
