Smart Voter Political Philosophy for David A. Spence

Candidate for
Council Member; City of La Canada Flintridge

This information is provided by the candidate

City of La Canada Flintridge for Member of the City Council

Name: DAVID A. SPENCE

Occupation: Businessman

As your Mayor, I have focused on the issues that are the bedrock of our way of life -- schools, children, and fiscal responsibility. I have two sons, am the "adopted" father of my niece and her two small children, and I teach Sunday School. This provides me with a unique understanding of the concerns across the generations and an appreciation for the varied reasons each of us has chosen to live in this vibrant community.

Through action, not words I've been fortunate to play a role in preserving and enhancing our quality of life. At a time when people often define themselves by what they are against, I have strived to define myself for what I am for:

I support our schools in the LCUSD and the GUSD. I served on the LCF Educational Foundation Board.

I support an efficient and friendly small town government that works for everyone, not special interests or select groups.

An independent businessman, I support fiscal responsibility.

My achievements as a Councilmember include:

Making La Canada more friendly and City Hall more effective by uniting, not dividing, our community and insisting that open government be more than a political slogan.

Solving the Sport Chalet issue in an open and fair process and making sensible zoning changes to stop mansionization.

Putting our children first by working hand-in-hand with the LCUSD, improving sports fields, and slowing down residential traffic.

Bettering our quality of life by securing $450,000 to purchase Rockridge Terrace for a park in Western La Canada and creating "Music in the Park" for all ages to enjoy.

With many fundamental issues decided by 3-2 votes, this is not the time to change direction. As part of the Council Majority, I've provided the decisive 3rd vote for:

Families: Supporting the LCUSD's effort to obtain modernization funds, negotiations to acquire new sport fields, resurfacing the FIS tennis courts, and park beatification.

Responsibility: Demonstrating a fair and financially sound sewer plan.

Environment: Advocating local control for the prudent and responsible "alternative" to the 710 Freeway and a plan to build soundwalls.

I have the experience, passion, and time to keep making our small town City Hall positive, efficient, and fiscally responsible. I respectfully ask for your continued confidence and support in order to carry on my efforts to preserve our rich history, fight for our public schools, and bring positive, mainstream decisions to your City Council.

/s/ David A. Spence
